The format was born at The Comedy Store in Hollywood, originally as a fun sideline to keep the energy going during open mic nights. The idea was simple: two comedians go head-to-head, trading brutal, funny insults, while a panel of judges (usually comedians themselves) decides the winner. What started as comic Brian Moses refereeing spontaneous insults at the "Verbal Violence" show became a full format. With the help of comedians like Jeff Ross, a staple of televised celebrity roasts, Roast Battle gained traction fast.
